AMS is being spotlighted by the Board of Education this month. At the board meeting, we presented our stellar counseling team and highlighted many of the supports and services they offer to our students. Check out our video to learn more!

for giving us the opportunity to highlight or counseling program here in Albany Middle School my name's Kelly Brennan on the current sixth grade and I'm bringing over the current 8th grade counselor we're really excited to talk to you about the comprehensive counseling program that we had here at the middle school for the first time this year we have three full-time counters which allowed us to loop with our students to get to know them over the course of the three years I'm the 7th grade counselor and middle school is a really exciting time in everybody's life and there's a lot of Developmental changes that happen in our role is really to help students navigate the ice and downs of middle school we try really are 2D stigmatize coming to see a counselor it's really important for us that students know that we're a resource available for them at all times second only to infancy most intensive. Brain development typically happens at around age 12 6th grade remember puberty at the same time they are changing kids mental Overdrive the prefrontal cortex used for judgment critical thinking and self-control moral of a story if you're looking for the peak time to optimize a person's brain development it's in Middle School 6th grade welcome to Middle School students kids make that important change my name is Tony Martinez the Brookfield I am a Spanish 7th grade teacher at Albany Middle School over the years that I've been here I have seen the important role that are counselors play in our school overall I think that it is really important for students at this stage of their lives in go to have a counselor that they can go to for their needs whether their emotional weather their academic weather there in organization and very very important things that counselors do with student I I think that the benefit of having one dedicated counselor for grade is has just been huge has been really meaningful and important for students and and I see having that looping the counselors would be a really important thing to as it's all based on relationships and it's based on on the the weight of the counselors know the students and they know their needs they establish relationships the Family Soul so so from one year to the next it's important to have that continuity of care and relationship and really attending to whatever makes her students be successful during their time at Middle School so what are things that we talked about with our 7th graders is that everything is connected and developmentally ever little 7th grader is dealing with family Dynamics social dynamics and academic Dynamic sitting there trying to maneuver through the ups and downs of that and our role as the counselor is really to help him navigate that the other pieces that we try to increase their awareness around Howdy's are all connected how does one impact another how are these connected so that increase their mindfulness students know better how to access to their resources or potentially would they need to seek some help France and said they're not doing well academically they should know that you know family and social may be impacted as well or if something's happening socially That Couldn't family life in academics and just increase that awareness for those really helpful if they move forward counselors supported me through everything from homework to personal problems I've had I've had my counselor since 6th grade and he's been with me since 6th grade all the way through 8th grade what really helps is you have trouble with homework you can get weekly progress reports to keep you updated on your homework especially if you're behind and counters can help with like friend problems or if you just don't have anybody to sit with at lunch like to help you just like feel better in order to like be confident in making new friends or if you have a problem with your friends then you can just talk to them and I've had $5 all throughout years Middle School of course and I talk to you every single one of the counselors and it's just so helpful to have somebody else listen other than like your pillow or the friend that you don't want to talk to time we can get the benefits of having a counselor for each grade level is that they can specialize in the concert and projects at each grade is going through like for a three or five thirds scares maybe something to do with it was science because of a dead sections and all those notes and it's also super important that it appears feel welcome at it again because their new here and having a counselor flake once the answer is really helpful I have found that as an eighth grade teacher of the counselors have been extremely important with helping the students prepare for the bigger project like the Isis project to help parents informed it in the loop I also think that the counseling team is doing a great job helping to bring students from 7th grade to 8th grade and have them ready for that added responsibility of your projects longer-term projects and also the counselors help with I'm getting Sims ready for high school I've had the counselors of cold lunch time informational meetings where high school students, and answer questions for students the counselor provide a lot of great advice to get them ready for grade they are extremely important and we value
