Measure G Special Update
This week has been immensely sad and challenging due to the sudden, unexpected passing of Superintendent Frank Wells on Monday, March 11. With the greatest possible respect to his legacy, we decided to move forward with sending this update according to his wishes. He wanted to thank Albany voters for their overwhelming support of Measure G, which was on the March 5 Presidential Primary Ballot. Supt. Wells was absolutely elated that voters had shown once again that Albany values children and the education that they need to achieve their own bright futures, as well as our collective future.
Supt. Wells met with members of the Yes On Measure G For Albany Schools 2024 Campaign Committee last Friday afternoon, possibly his last official meeting as our Superintendent. He expressed his sincere gratitude to everyone, including the teachers of Albany Teachers Association, for campaigning so vigorously and informing the community about this measure. We echo those heartfelt thanks to the campaigners.
It is extremely likely that Measure G will pass although votes continue to be tallied. Currently, over 4,000 votes have been counted with 78% of them supporting the Measure. Given this greater than 3-to-1 margin, we are close to solidifying a positive outcome.
Looking back, it was with tremendous foresight that Supt. Wells encouraged the Board of Education to consider a funding measure last fall. In November the Board approved placing Measure G on the March ballot.
January brought a surprise, when Governor Newsom’s preliminary state budget was announced with a significant drop to school funding. If Measure G had not been on the ballot, Albany schools would have been forced to make devastating layoffs prior to the next school year, changing the quality of our TK–12 education program. Because of your support, Albany schools will be able to tighten our belts without extreme changes. We will not know the actual state budget until June, but signs are indicating that it is unlikely that schools will receive much more than what the Governor proposed in January.
Protecting the core educational capabilities of our schools and ensuring that all students have the services they need to reach their full potential, is the legacy of Superintendent Frank Wells. We are full of gratitude both to him, and every Measure G supporter, for this precious gift.
