Dear AUSD Community,
At the April 23, 2025 Albany High versus Pinole Valley High School (PVHS) varsity baseball game, members of the Albany team and community were subjected to racist remarks. AUSD is committed to protecting all of our students from racial harassment and intimidation. Albany High student athletes know that they are held to high standards of respectful and ethical behavior. We expect the same from the teams we meet in friendly competition and will not tolerate racialized harassment. I was made aware of this situation over the weekend and have since been guiding the AUSD response, including reaching out to the Superintendent of West Contra Costa Unified School District. This situation is not yet fully resolved, but I wanted to keep you informed of what has been done so far.
Our response to this incident has included:
- A complaint to the California Interscholastic Federation-North Coast Section (CIF-NCS)
- A complaint by AUSD’s Athletic Director to the umpire’s association regarding the lack of a robust response by umpires at the April 23 game and the following game on April 25
- Albany High Principal McNally has met with parents who were at these games and who have also initiated actions.
- AHS Principal McNally has met with the PVHS Principal and Athletic Director to reinforce the seriousness of the situation and the expectation that all schools hold their students to the same standards AHS holds for our athletes.
How we are supporting our baseball team:
Athletic Director Bill Treseler has met with the team to reaffirm that the behavior they encountered was inappropriate and has let the team know what actions we are taking to ensure that this does not happen again to them or to other Albany teams. We are also offering extra mental health counseling for any athlete who has been impacted by this situation.
Pinole Valley High School’s response:
Principal Todd Irving of Pinole Valley High School sent this letter, which I wanted to share with you in its entirety.
In conclusion, please know that I take incidents such as this very seriously. I will continue to work toward a satisfactory resolution for our athletes, their families, and the community members who were there to support the team.
