This week for National Native American Heritage Month. In March of 1964, five Sioux Native American activists briefly occupied Alcatraz Island and demanded that it be used as a Native American cultural center and university. They offered to pay the federal government the same amount for the land that the government had offered them: 47 cents per acre. The demonstration resulted in increased media attention for indigenous peoples’ protests.
