PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Good Evening AMS Community,

This week went by quickly! It’s hard to believe that we are just two weeks away from the end of the first quarter.

This Saturday, we hope you can join us for Celebración Latina from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the AMS Courtyard. The event is hosted by Familias Latinas de Albany, and everyone is welcome to attend. Come celebrate the richness of Latin culture through music, food, and performing arts. There will be community performances, a scavenger hunt and piñatas for the kids, along with food trucks, raffles, and prizes. We hope you can join us! All are welcome, and the weather is going to be amazing!

Next week is our first Spirit Week of the year! On Monday, we hope your student will participate in Pajama Day. We are looking forward to seeing lots of school spirit throughout the week!

Our After School Homework Support Program is going well, but we would love to see more students take advantage of this opportunity to do their homework at school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in classrooms with teachers who are available to assist as needed. We hope you will encourage your child to attend at least one day next week, and encourage them to bring a friend. Snacks are provided.

Wednesday is International Walk and Roll Day at Albany Middle School. We will be tallying how many of our students walk, ride their bike, scooter, or skateboard to school on that day.

A reminder that there is no school next Friday as part of Fall Break, and there is also no school the following Monday as we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Please also note that school on Thursday ends at 3:30 pm rather than our normal Thursday end time of 3:05 pm.

Finally, to commemorate the end of the first quarter, we will have our first school dance of the year on Friday, October 16th, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the AMS Courtyard. The dance is open to 7th and 8th grade students. We are excited to give our students an opportunity to come together, have some fun, and celebrate the end of the quarter!

Have a wonderful weekend, and we hope to see many of you at Celebración Latina on Saturday!

Go Cobras!

Message to AUSD Parents/Caregivers

Parent/Caregiver involvement is an essential pillar of the Albany Unified School District community. Our Parent & Caregiver Affinity Groups offer a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, collaborate, and support one another through initiatives that foster student academic growth and social-emotional well-being.

AUSD warmly invites all parents and caregivers to join a group(s) that aligns with your identity and helps support our students and schools. Please explore the options below and click the link for the group(s) you would like to join:

Asian Pacific Islander Parent Engagement Group (API-PEG)

Albany’s Pride (LGBTQ)

Black Parent Advisory Group (BPAG)

Familias Latinas de Albany

Jewish Parent Engagement Group

Southwest Asian and North African Parent Engagement Group (SWANA)

If you have any questions about the Affinity Groups overall, please contact Deb Brill, Executive Director of Student Services. If you have any questions about joining an Affinity Group on Parent Square, please contact Linda Williams, Attendance and Family Engagement Coordinator.

PTA CORNER

Wednesday, October 14, join us in hosting Lucy Chen for a parent education talk on AI Education. We'll have our regular PTA meeting from 6:30-7:00 pm and then the talk will run from 7-8 pm. Please join us for both, in person in the AMS Library. Lucy's presentation, “AI Education: The Opportunity and the Risk,” will be a conversation about how AI is changing the way our kids learn and prepare for the future. You can submit your questions in advance here to give Lucy an idea what you're thinking about on this topic.

Friday, October 16 is the first AMS dance of the year in the school courtyard. This dance is for 7th and 8th graders. We'll need parent chaperones, decorating and cleanup help, and some donations of chips, water, cups, and apple cider. Sign up here to help out with the dance!

Friday, October 23, we'll have our first AMS teacher and staff lunch of the year. This is a special and important event in which we cater a meal for all the AMS teachers and staff who work so hard to support our kids. Sign up here to contribute food, items, or finances to the staff lunch!

We are so grateful for your support and look forward to seeing you at some of these October events!

Please Join the PTA! Join to support AMS students and teachers, connect with other families, and strengthen school spirit! It's so simple, and it's just $37. We currently have 162 members and are 54% of the way to our goal of 300. Join or renew today!

Fall Sports Donation Reminder

If your student is participating in a Fall sport, Girls Volleyball, Cross Country, Wrestling, or Flag Football, and you have not yet made your athletic donation for the season, it is not too late! If you are willing and able to make a contribution, we greatly appreciate your support.

If you have already made your athletic donation, thank you! Your support helps pay for assistant coaches, B/JV/Developmental teams, uniforms, officials, and equipment.

At AMS, we are proud that so many of our students have the opportunity to participate in one or more athletic programs throughout the school year and during their time at Albany Middle School. We ask each family to make a $175 donation per athletic season, but any amount helps and is greatly appreciated.

This Fall, we have 290 student-athletes participating in our athletic programs:

  • 154 Girls Volleyball

  •   45 Flag Football

  •   29 Wrestling

  •   62 Cross Country

That is 290 AMS students representing our school through athletics!

Thank you for supporting AMS Athletics and helping us provide these opportunities for our students.

Go Cobras!!!
