Dear AUSD Community,
In our continuing efforts to keep you informed on Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are aware of two confirmed cases in Solano and Alameda counties. For more information, please follow the link from the Alameda County Public Health Department: http://www.acphd.org/2019-ncov.aspx.
It is important to remember that handling the spread of a serious contagion like the coronavirus is primarily a task for public health agencies. Please be assured that AUSD is closely monitoring information being shared by the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPDH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on best practices to prevent infection and flu. To ensure the health and well-being of our students and staff, we will continue to share this information as it is available.
Recommendations for Staying Healthy
We encourage all students, parents/guardians, and staff to follow standard health protocols and hygiene best practices to prevent the spread of all infectious diseases:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your nose and/or mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you sneeze or cough, then throw away the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Get a flu vaccination (i.e., a "flu shot").
- Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. Instead, they advise frequent handwashing as a more effective source of protection. Face masks should be worn by people who show symptoms to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a healthcare facility).
We understand this news can be concerning and encourage community members to view additional resources for information on best practices:

While the global spread of this virus has evolved rapidly, it is important to remember the CDC considers California to be a “low risk” area. Maintaining a healthy learning environment will require that we all work together to prevent the spread of illness.
