Dear Albany Community,
Black History Month began this Wednesday, and we are excited to see all of our schools bringing this important work into classroom lessons and special events. Third grade students at Cornell spoke about it at Community Time this week, and fifth graders wrote dream poems inspired by Langston Hughes. You may have noticed our post welcoming all to Black History Month, and we will continue to highlight it here, especially next week as we approach our Black History Month Celebration on February 15, at 6pm at the Albany High School Little Theater.
Singing Tree Murals
Last week, the AMS Mural Club unveiled their creation, the AMS Singing Tree of Strength and Happiness, which will decorate the AMS atrium. Over 15 students worked on it for five months, with the beautiful result you can see in the photo above. Led by AUSD parent Sweta Chawla, with assistance from art teacher Natacha Christopherson, and support from the AMS PTA, the goal was to support connection, self-confidence, and help youth heal from the isolation of the pandemic by connecting creatively with other students. This incredible video lets them tell their own story.
This is the second Singing Tree mural in an Albany school. Dr. Chawla led Ms. Banales’ 4th grade Ocean View class last year in creating a mural that was featured at the 2022 Bioneers Conference at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. See the mural and hear about the process in this video. Both murals are part of an international effort to promote unity through art. The Ocean View mural is considered #106 in this series, and the AMS mural is #115.
ACC’s Butterflies of Albany Hill Mural
The Butterflies of Albany Hill mural outside of the Albany Children’s Center is also making news. The Essig Museum of Entomology at the University of California at Berkeley recently ran this wonderful story about the mural, the research behind it, and the community members who painted it.
Parent Information Nights
Monday evening we had a great TK and Kindergarten Information Night presentation, featuring our elementary principals and enrollment staff. The video of the presentation, slides, and the Q&A are all available on our website. Since young families move into Albany all the time, you could get a new neighbor who might be interested in these resources.
On Wednesday evening we hosted a presentation on Fentanyl Awareness. This dangerous synthetic opioid is driving the opioid epidemic and can be lethal even in small doses. The video recording of that presentation is now available. Additionally, students grades 5–12 received information from the California Department of Education related to the risks of fentanyl use. Board Meeting Date/Location Change
The Board of Education meeting originally scheduled for February 14 has been moved to February 16. It will take place in the Cornell Elementary Multipurpose Room and will not be available on Zoom or be videotaped. Those features are only available for meetings in the City of Albany Council Chambers.

Murales de árboles cantores
