We are approaching the end of the first week of school, and overall it was an amazingly smooth start. Students were excited to be back on campus beginning a new year, see the photo above of the Marin student coming down the Entrance Slide on the first day!
AHS Updates Cell Phone Policy
There is increasing evidence that overuse of cell phones can have detrimental effects on the mental health of youth. Over-use of cell phones has been linked to the increases in depression and anxiety in youth, and cell phones often play a central role in cyberbullying and academic dishonesty. Effective the first day of school, Albany/MacGregor High School’s policy is that cell phones are not to be used during class time. This aligns the high schools with the policy already in place at Albany Middle School. Students are still allowed to possess phones, and may use them during non-instructional times, such as passing periods or lunch. Book About AHS Instagram Incident Coming Out
Local author Dashka Slater, who wrote The 57 Bus, has a new book coming out about events in 2017 involving students at Albany High and a racist Instagram account. This book, titled Accountable, will be officially released next Tuesday, August 22. This Sunday, we expect an interview with Ms. Slater and an excerpt from the book to be in the New York Times Magazine. That article was released online today, with the headline The Instagram Account That Shattered a California High School. Albany Unified School District will not comment on any student discipline, which is always strictly confidential.
Although I came to Albany Unified after these events, it was clear that this incident had caused tremendous hurt within the student body, AUSD families, and the broader community. I know that this book will open wounds. A lot has happened in the six years since this incident has occurred, and AUSD’s continuous cycles of improvement have caused positive change. Our schools immediately increased their efforts to teach students at all grade levels about inclusivity. A sample of these efforts was reported in this article in the AUSD 2023 Newsletter.
The sad truth is that racist incidents occur at school with high frequency throughout our nation, and that the incident here was not rare or unique. What is important is that AUSD will not tolerate racism. Our response to this event, and to the new book, is to use it as a lesson for what must change, and do our utmost to maintain schools that are safe, inclusive, and welcoming to all. I will be running a Superintendent’s Book Club for the AUSD community to discuss Accountable on Monday evenings beginning August 28. If you would like to join the group, please sign up on this form. Registration will be limited to 60 people. If the demand is high, I will consider running a second group. The book will also be featured as this year’s selection for Albany Reads campaign of the Albany Library later this fall.
