Dear Albany Community,
If you haven’t seen the chalked Pride Progress flag in person in front of Albany High, you can see me and the chalk artists in the photo above. While teachers and staff were getting professional training inside our schools on Monday, some of us were outside getting this flag ready for National Coming Out Day, which was Wednesday, October 11. It was a great way to affirm that AUSD is a safe and inclusive district for everyone.
Recent AHS Graduates Featured on CBS News
CBS News ran an in-depth story about students making friends across the American divide through the American Exchange Project (AEP). Thirty new Albany High graduates were able to go on a free, week-long trip to a hometown very different from their own, and new graduates from other states came to Albany. This is the second year that AHS teacher Chris Knight has worked with AEP to give students the opportunity to cross the boundaries of blue states and red states to find the gray areas of common ground. The segment aired last Sunday, October 8, and is a great watch!
Organic Milk Joins Other Food Service Improvements
In the next several weeks The Albany School Food Project is launching an organic bulk milk program at AUSD’s elementary schools. Large stainless steel milk dispensers will keep milk icy cold and appealing, encouraging kids to drink more milk. Bulk milk reduces waste of both milk and milk cartons. Although compostable cups will be used now, later this year schools plan to move to reusable cups and other reusable dishware. These changes are part of our climate change action plan, described in the AUSD Environmental Action Plan. Can you help? Volunteers are needed to help students with the milk dispensers at lunch and breakfast for the first week of the organic milk launch.
Budget Corner—How Do We Get Funded?
At Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, AUSD’s Chief Business Official provided a simple, clear presentation on exactly how school districts in California are funded, using AUSD as an example. Take a moment to look through the slides or watch the video and note how many surprising facts you discover!

Graduados recientes de AHS presentados en CBS News

La leche orgánica se suma a otras mejoras en el servicio alimentario
En las próximas semanas, el Proyecto de Alimentación Escolar de Albany lanzará un programa de leche orgánica a granel en las escuelas primarias del AUSD.
