Dear Albany Community,
Many of us got an alert through our phones Wednesday morning regarding an earthquake that was detected near Antioch. This quake was not severe, but it is notable that we might receive a warning in advance of future seismic events. Coincidentally, California conducted a statewide test of earthquake readiness this week. Albany schools practice emergency procedures throughout the year, with fire drills, evacuations, and earthquake drills.
The Great Shake-Out
On Thursday, October 19, some Albany schools participated in a statewide earthquake drill called the Great California Shake-Out. Drills at our schools are regularly accomplished with a great deal of age-appropriate reassurance that they are a practice. It is essential for student and staff safety to learn and be comfortable with emergency procedures. These drills will help students carry out a familiar process in the event of a true emergency.
Ocean View’s Fall Festival
Ocean View Elementary’s biggest event of the school year is their Fall Festival, which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, October 21. This PTA fundraiser is open to all Albany community members and it is always a blast! There will be the traditional student walkathon in the park, along with face painting, pumpkin decorating, carnival games, and an airbrush artist creating custom caps. Food will be available for purchase. You can also take a look at Ocean View’s amazing new mural, pictured above.
Funding Survey
AUSD has commissioned GRA and McGuire Research to conduct research on important issues related to funding in the Albany Unified School District. Beginning early next week, you may be contacted by email, text or telephone. Your individual responses are entirely confidential, anonymous, and will be used for research purposes only. This survey is simply to get your opinion—your individual data will not be sold or provided to anyone. If you are contacted, I would appreciate it if you would take the time to respond. The survey results will be reported back to the Board of Education at a public meeting later this school year.
Free Narcan Kits and Training
Deadly fentanyl overdoses continue to be a serious issue across the country. Naloxone (Narcan) is a safe and effective medication that can reverse overdoses and having it readily available can make our community safer. To that end, we have it at all of our schools. Although Narcan is now available over-the-counter, Alameda County is continuing its program to distribute free naloxone and to train people to use it. Register for the short online training here: Opioid Overdose Responder & Naloxone Training. An AMS parent has volunteered to pick up and distribute kits locally. Once you've completed your training, email her at [email protected], and she will arrange to get you your kit.
