Dear Albany Community,
For our younger students, this week was all about Halloween. Using holiday themes is a great way to harness students’ excitement to enrich learning. Over the past two weeks, teachers sparked lots of learning using Halloween themes. Speaking of our teachers, in the flurry of enjoying the wonderfully creative costumes students were wearing, you may have missed some of the amazing costumes worn by elementary staff. See below!
Great Debater
"Jugend debattiert" is an international debate contest in the German language. After winning the West Coast Final earlier this year, Lars Karcher, a senior at AHS, debated last weekend in Washington, D.C in the North American Championship, where he made it to the Final Round and placed fourth overall. Congratulations to Lars for these achievements! Lars was born and raised in California, and has learned German at home and through the BAKS+ after school program.
Lars’ parents immigrated to the Bay Area from Germany. Albany is a community of immigrants, and it can be difficult for families to carry on important aspects of cultural heritage, such as language. The Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools is a source of information about schools designed to teach children language and culture.
Albany Middle School Craft Fair Is This Sunday!
The AMS Craft Fair is fun and a wonderful way to support student crafters as well as the AMS PTA. Get your holiday shopping done with beautiful, one-of-a-kind handmade items. Enjoy baked goods at the Cobra Cafe, see friends and neighbors, and listen to live music while strolling around the tables. The AMS Craft Fair is Sunday, November 5, 11:00am–3:00pm in the AMS Gymnasium.

Para nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes, esta semana fue todo sobre Halloween. Usar temas navideños es una excelente manera de aprovechar el entusiasmo de los estudiantes para enriquecer el aprendizaje. Durante las últimas dos semanas, los maestros generaron mucho aprendizaje utilizando temas de Halloween. Hablando de nuestros maestros, en el frenesí de disfrutar de los disfraces maravillosamente creativos que llevaban los estudiantes, es posible que se haya perdido algunos de los increíbles disfraces usados por el personal de primaria. ¡Vea abajo!
Gran polemista
"Jugend debattiert" es un concurso internacional de debate en lengua alemana. Después de ganar la final de la costa oeste a principios de este año, Lars Karcher, estudiante de último año en AHS, debatió el fin de semana pasado en Washington, DC en el Campeonato Norteamericano, donde llegó a la Ronda Final y quedó cuarto en la general. ¡Felicitaciones a Lars por estos logros! Lars nació y creció en California y aprendió alemán en casa y a través del programa extracurricular BAKS+ .
Los padres de Lars emigraron al Área de la Bahía desde Alemania. Albany es una comunidad de inmigrantes y puede resultar difícil para las familias conservar aspectos importantes del patrimonio cultural, como el idioma. La Coalición de Escuelas Comunitarias de Idiomas Patrimoniales es una fuente de información sobre escuelas diseñadas para enseñar idiomas y cultura a los niños.

La Feria de Artesanía de AMS es divertida y una manera maravillosa de apoyar a los estudiantes artesanos, así como a la PTA de AMS. 伟大的辩手
“Jugend debattiert”是一项德语国际辩论比赛。在今年早些时候赢得西海岸决赛后，AHS 的大四学生拉尔斯·卡彻 (Lars Karcher) 上周末在华盛顿特区参加了北美锦标赛辩论，他进入了决赛并获得了第四名。祝贺拉尔斯取得这些成就！ Lars 在加利福尼亚州出生和长大，在家中并通过BAKS+课外项目学习德语。
拉尔斯的父母从德国移民到湾区。奥尔巴尼是一个移民社区，家庭可能很难传承重要的文化遗产，例如语言。社区传统语言学校联盟是有关旨在教授儿童语言和文化的学校的信息来源。
