Dear Albany Community,
Welcome back to school! I was elated to see the happy faces of students and their families this week as we returned for the second half of the school year. There was energy and enthusiasm at every school. Learning really accelerates during this semester as classroom routines are well-established, expectations are known, and students have grown a little bit older since we started school last August. Basically, Albany classrooms have hit the ground running and will keep up the pace until June.
Measure G: Funding for Teacher Retention & Academic Excellence
Albany Unified School District (AUSD) schools are ranked among the best in the State thanks to excellent teachers and innovative academic programs. Parents and community members alike have said that AUSD schools help to improve the quality of life in the community and protect the value of homes. Measure G, (which would replace sunsetting Measure B), is on the March 5 ballot and would authorize levy of a tax of $0.55 per building square foot to maintain excellent schools.
As you can see from the table above, Albany schools receive far less than the state average in per pupil funding. This is due to our relatively low percentage of students in the highest needs categories. The state provides higher funding to districts with the greatest percentage of high-need students. Although I applaud this principle, lower funding makes keeping Albany schools excellent an incredible challenge. The pandemic was especially difficult for students, and we are working diligently to make sure that all students have the supports they need to meet and exceed standards. This requires more, not fewer, resources.
In the coming weeks, I will be sharing more information so that everyone in the Albany community can be fully informed on this issue.

Querida comunidad de Albany,
¡Bienvenido de nuevo al colegio! Me alegró mucho ver las caras felices de los estudiantes y sus familias esta semana cuando regresamos para la segunda mitad del año escolar. Había energía y entusiasmo en cada escuela. El aprendizaje realmente se acelera durante este semestre a medida que las rutinas en el aula están bien establecidas, las expectativas son conocidas y los estudiantes han crecido un poco desde que comenzamos las clases en agosto pasado. Básicamente, las aulas de Albany han comenzado a funcionar y mantendrán el ritmo hasta junio.
Medida G: Financiamiento para la retención docente y la excelencia académica
Las escuelas del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Albany (AUSD) están clasificadas entre las mejores del estado gracias a sus excelentes maestros y programas académicos innovadores. Tanto los padres como los miembros de la comunidad han dicho que las escuelas del AUSD ayudan a mejorar la calidad de vida en la comunidad y proteger el valor de las viviendas. La Medida G (que reemplazaría la extinción de la Medida B) está en la boleta electoral del 5 de marzo y autorizaría la recaudación de un impuesto de $0.55 por pie cuadrado de edificio para mantener escuelas excelentes.
Como puede ver en la tabla anterior, las escuelas de Albany reciben mucho menos que el promedio estatal en financiación por alumno.
