Dear Albany Community,
Albany High School had their Back-To-School-Night program on Wednesday, and parents jostled their way through the halls trying to get to their next class while greeting all the friends they saw along the way. It was reminiscent of what students experience every day! I hope that most parents were able to meet their student’s teachers during these special back-to-school events.
Extreme Heat Affects Schools in Southern California
You have probably heard in the news about multiple schools and school districts in Southern California moving to short days because of the extreme heat. Smoke from wildfires that causes poor air quality is also causing concern. This notice from Torrance Unified School District is typical:
“Torrance Unified School District has issued a minimum school day for Monday, September 9, in response to the excessive heat advisory. Like other local Districts in our area, many of our classrooms do not have air conditioning units, so this decision prioritizes the health and safety of our students, staff, and community…”
Albany weather is fundamentally different than that of Torrance, but according to this Hechinger Report, “America’s schools are vastly underprepared for extreme heat: An estimated 36,000 public schools don’t have adequate HVAC systems, and the combined costs of upgrading or installing necessary HVAC systems by 2025 is estimated at $4.4 billion nationally, according to the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank.”
Albany Unified is aware that the HVAC systems at the high school and middle school are near the end of their use life, as well as multiple other facility needs that would help our schools be more resilient in the face of climate change. Celebrate All-Star Teacher "Profe" Pam Lim-McAlister!
Albany High teacher Pam Lim-McAlister, affectionately known as “Profe”, won the 2024 NBC Sports Bay Area All-Star Teacher of the Year this summer. This is an incredible honor for her, and brings a prize of $30,000 to Albany High School. I extend my sincere congratulations to Profe and know that many grateful students she has taught contributed to her success. Staff, students, and the Albany community will be gathering on the front steps of the high school next Friday, September 20 at 1pm for the presentation of the official $30,000 prize check during lunch, with NBC Sports there filming. All are welcome, please come if you can and cheer for Profe!
Hispanic Heritage Month
The Board of Education acknowledged Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15) with this proclamation at Tuesday’s meeting. Albany Unified’s parent engagement group, Familias Latinas de Albany, is launching District activities with the Celebración Latina, this Sunday, Sept. 15, from 2–6pm at the Albany Middle School courtyard. Everyone is invited, please come and celebrate!
School Board Candidate Forum
The League of Women Voters will be holding a virtual forum for Board of Education candidates on September 17. You can send in questions ahead of time for the candidates to answer. There are two seats available on the school board, and four candidates. Watching the forum is a great way to inform your vote. Register here.
Most District Committees On Hold
The primary focus of all District staff is student learning and ensuring that the conditions necessary for learning are in place. As we concentrate on that, along with the necessary work needed to select and transition to a new Superintendent, the Board of Education determined that some committees would be temporarily placed on hold. The District English Language Advisory Committee and the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee will continue to meet. The Student Achievement Committee, Wellness Committee, Environmental Action Plan Committee, Board Policy Committee, and Budget Advisory Committee will be on a temporary hiatus. The Board will be reviewing the goals of these committees and will consider updating their deliverables and committee structure. Committee meetings are planned to resume in early 2025.

La mayoría de los comités distritales en suspenso
