Dear Albany Community,
We have now completed the first six weeks of school—they have flown by quickly! While I’ve attended some school events, I’m now starting to visit classrooms. I’ve seen a lot of good things happening for students. I’m excited that we’re off to a great start!
October Is Special Education Awareness Month
Albany Unified School District serves approximately 560 students formally identified with disabilities, across Section 504 and Special Education, representing roughly 15% of the total student population. In October, we take a moment to acknowledge the rich history and achievements of individuals with disabilities, and recognize that disability is part of human diversity. This is a great time to say thanks to our Section 504 case managers, student services, and special education staff, which includes certificated teachers, para-educators, occupational therapists, speech therapists, school psychologist, assistive technology specialist, behavior analyst, and low-incidence service providers.
However, our students with disabilities are general education students first, and the implementation of meaningful education of students with disabilities is the responsibility of all AUSD educators. Students with disabilities have the right and ability to learn alongside their non-disabled peers with equitable and meaningful opportunities to learn and grow.
AUSD recognizes that a wide range of practices, such as evidenced-based instructional methods, universal design for learning, inclusive practices, restorative justice practices, social and emotional learning, bullying prevention and intervention, mental health supports, and authentic family engagement are proven to substantially improve the educational and equitable outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities. We are committed to working towards equitable outcomes for students with disabilities and support a vision of high expectations for all students.
Superintendent Search Update
The Board of Education is responsible for hiring a district’s superintendent. At the request of the community, the Board chose to convene a panel representing our school community who will also interview the five finalists for the position. The Community Panel consists of:

Interviews will be held this weekend with the goal of the Board selecting a finalist soon.
