Dear Albany Community,
This is the time of year when students’ growth and maturity move into the spotlight. There are just over five weeks left in the school year, and campuses are buzzing with events, trips, and acknowledgements of student achievements. Just yesterday, Albany Middle School held their annual Open House. Families listened to the talented AMS Jazz Band and went to their student’s classrooms to see posted work. Open Houses highlight what students have accomplished in a much broader context than a grade and help build the school-home connection. Marin and Ocean View will have their Open Houses on May 8, Cornell’s Open House is May 15.
Students Honored
Two Albany High students' photos were judged to be in the Top 100 in the 2024 American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) High School Physics Photo contest! The photos by Nikhil Pollard (current senior) and William Chen (graduated in 2024) are on the AAPT contest website. Nikhil's photo “Tendrils of Plasma” of a Tesla coil discharging was featured as the March 2025 cover of the Physics Teacher Magazine (shown above). Congratulations to Nikhil and William, for photos that are beautifully fascinating, and to their Physics teacher, Ms. Valerie Risk, for developing creative assignments that bridge science and art.
The Albany High School (AHS) Chamber Singers competed at the invitation-only Golden State Choral Competition on Tuesday and won second place. Only eight other choirs were invited to this prestigious event. The Chamber Singers were also honored for stage presence, professionalism, and artistic excellence.
The AHS Wind Ensemble recently returned from a trip to New York City, where they performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the New York International Music Festival. The festival featured high school and college groups from across the US, Canada, and the Netherlands. Albany was honored to receive a Gold rating from the festival adjudicators, the highest distinction you can receive. This experience left the band with a stronger sense of camaraderie and faith in their talents, qualities that will improve the energy and cohesiveness of the ensemble. The first time students heard themselves during the soundcheck rehearsal at Carnegie Hall was nothing short of stunning.
The AHS Theatre Ensemble entered a regional competition for high school musical theater. Basye Mummert was nominated by a panel of judges for Outstanding Lead Actress for her portrayal of Fiona in the AHS production of Shrek, The Musical. Congratulations to Bayse and to the entire cast and crew!
School Lunch Hero Day
May 2 is the day we honor our food service workers, called School Lunch Hero Day. Every day, dedicated staff ensure that students are well-fed and ready to learn at every Albany school. This is a special opportunity to recognize their hard work and dedication. Encourage your students to give a special thank you to their school lunch heroes next Friday, May 2. You can also download and print thank-you cards in English and Spanish that students can personalize.
Prop 28 Planning
The guaranteed funding for arts education that California’s Prop 28 provides is an incredible resource for Albany schools. This year, all schools were able to have additional programming through Prop 28. We anticipate having more funds available for the 2025–26 school year. All are welcome to hear the planning discussion for next year’s programs at a Special Board of Education Study Session, directly following their Regular meeting on April 29. Public comment will be accepted.
