It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with Hispanic and Latino heritage. Today we’re recognizing the math teacher, Jaime Escalante. Born in Bolivia, Escalante came to the US to seek a better life. He always loved math and celebrated his indigenous Aymara heritage, often saying that “The Aymara knew math before the Greeks and Egyptians.” Jaime had started teaching math in Bolivia and knew he would want to teach no matter what country he lived in. In 1974, he began teaching troubled students in a violent LA school. He is well-known for leading many of them to pass the advanced placement calculus test. His story was the subject of a book Jaime Escalante: The Best Teacher in America, and a movie, “Stand and Deliver”. He even had a postal stamp made in his honor and an asteroid named after him!

Here is a quote from Jaime: “If we expect kids to be losers, they will be losers; if we expect them to be winners they will be winners. They rise or fall to the expectations of those around them, especially their parents and teachers.”

Our first school dance will be Friday, November 3rd from 7-9 pm in the gym. Students may attend unless you have 10+ tardies, 3+ referrals or any number of suspensions. Please be mindful of tardies and see Mr. Haupert if you’ve been suspended or have 10+ tardies and would like to complete community service hours to attend.

The students, parents, and teachers at AMS will celebrate International Walk and Roll to School Day tomorrow, Wednesday, October 4. This is a great opportunity to celebrate our health, the environment, and our school spirit. With the suggestions below, we’re hoping every student will participate by either walking, biking/boarding, or carpooling to school. Those who can’t carpool can have their families drop them off a few blocks away and walk. Check out the courtyard on Wednesday morning for small prizes to those who participate.

The next student council meeting is tomorrow morning at 7:30 am in the AMS Library.

At lunch today:

  • Noontime sports is offering volleyball in the gym today.  6th grade games are first come, first served.  7th and 8th grade have open gym beginning at 1:00.  Please wait outside the gym at the white line, and a teacher will let you in.
  • Earth Team is meeting in room 107.  We will finalize our t-shirt design and hear about Tree Kangaroos from Caitlin!
