October is LGBT History Month, a U.S. observance started in 1994 to recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and the history of the gay rights movement. On October 14, 1979, an estimated 75,000 to 125,000 individuals marched in the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which is considered to be the birth of the national movement for LGBT rights.
