This week for National Native American Heritage Month, we are remembering the Occupation of Alcatraz. Building from the demonstration in 1964 that we heard about last week, in November of 1969, 100 Native American protesters -- including 80 UCLA students and mostly "urban Indians" -- began their 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island, citing the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie that gave unused federal land back to Native Americans.
