In 1954, the landmark case of Brown vs the Board of Education ruled that the practice of segregated schools was unconstitutional. This ruling set integration in motion, but things didn’t change immediately. In 1968, Berkeley designed an ambitious two-way bussing system, sending white students to schools in minority areas and black and Latino students to schools in white areas. The yellow buses of this system became a national symbol of integration. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote that, when it came to the project of school desegregation, it was only through the example of Berkeley’s “peaceful struggle through the process of community change” that “hope returned to my soul and spirit.”
