Electives

World Languages
World Language courses are designed for students with no previous background in the language of study. Students will learn the basics of the language: Culture, geography, and history of the countries where the language is spoken. These are academic courses in which students should expect daily homework, tests, and quizzes. Students will learn through interesting and fun activities like watching videos, singing popular songs, playing learning games, and participating in cultural celebrations. Two years of successful completion of a language at AMS will allow students to enter a second-year level as a freshman in high school. Students must begin middle school language study in 7th grade; there will be no entry point in 8th grade.

Wheel
Try out new electives throughout the year! Students on the wheel take art, computers, drama, and  health.

Music Electives
Choir Gold is a 7th grade choral ensemble open to singers of any level. This course focuses on healthy vocal production, music theory, and sight-reading. Choir Gold performs in 5-6 concerts throughout the year.

Orchestra is a course in orchestral music of varied styles and periods. Students must possess some ability to perform on their instrument. String Orchestra will perform several times throughout the year. This class is open to students who already play a string instrument, but with teacher permission a student who wishes to learn to play an instrument could be accepted.

Concert Band teaches students proper individual and band instrument technique, and in addition, students receive standards-based sequential music instruction. Students will perform multiple times throughout the year, including the CMEA Festival in the spring.

Jazz Band performs multiple times throughout the year. Enrollment in a daily band class is a prerequisite for beginner or advanced Jazz Band enrollment, with exceptions for piano and bass. Advanced Jazz Band is open to 7th and 8th grade by audition in May. Beginner/ Monday Jazz Band is open to 6th - 8th grade students by audition only in September. Please, speak with Mr. Chisholm to enroll in the class.

Health
Every 7th grader takes the equivalent of one quarter of health, either as a part of the wheel or pulled out of another elective.

Cobra Study
Cobra Study is designed to support students who can benefit from support around work completion. Preference is given to those students who are not interested in taking either a World Language or Music class.
